Charles Smith was a painter in oil and watercolour and was born in Chislehurst in Kent. He attended Brixton School of Building and Architecture, serving for a time in the RAF in WWII. He studied art at Heatherley’s School of Fine Art and Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, his teachers included David Ghilchik. Smith mainly painted marine pictures. He was a member of the renowned Wapping. Group of Artists (President from 1987–1992), the Chelsea Art Society and the Croydon Art Society. He exhibited in the provinces. The NatWest Bank and Sutton and Lemington Borough Councils hold his work. He was a Fellow of the Royal Society of Artists. His birth date is given in various publications as both 1913 and 1918, we’ve used the date given in Artists in Britain Since 1945 – David Buckman. The painting bears an artist’s exhibition label verso, with name, title and address at the time and is presented in its original framing’ which have had re-finished in gilt wax.
