Original Oil on Board “Coastal Scene” Signed under slip G Charlton (1899-1977) C 1930s

Provenance: this Oil is from the Studio Collection of George Charlton. George Charlton (1899-1977) was a figure and landscape painter, who lived in Hampstead, London. He studied at the Slade School from 1914 and was on its staff from 1919 under Sir Henry Tonks. George and his wife Daphne (particularly) were great friends of Sir Stanley Spencer, and a portrait of Daphne by Spencer is at the Tate Gallery. George was an examiner for the University of London General School Examination from 1931 and an examiner of the Board for Education Art Examinations from 1932. He was a member of the New English Art Club from 1926. He exhibited widely (129 works) at the Grosvenor, the Goupil, the Walker, the Manchester City and the Redfern Galleries as well as at the New English Art Club. There was a George and Daphne Charlton show at the Chambers Gallery in 2005, the accompanying catalogue was very enlightening on their singular marriage! The oil was framed in a spendid gilt moulding and is set within a canvas slip in the early 1980s
