Sydney Ernest Wilson was best known as a mezzotint engraver. During the early part of the 20th century he made many mezzotint engravings of popular paintings by earlier British painters including Gainsborough. Most of his mezzotints were published by Vicars Brothers of Old Bond Street, who were responsible for publishing this one as well. Sydney Wilson was born in Isleworthand exhibited beween 1906 and 1913 at the Walker Gallery in Liverpool, the New Gallery and the Royal Academy. He lived in Harpenden. The Truants was originally painted by William Redmore Biggs, who exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and the British Institution until his death. After having been an associate for many years, he was elected an RA in 1814. He died in London. This selected proof is presented in its original gilt framing and bears a Fine Art Trade Guild blind-stamp. On the verso of the framing is the original descriptive label, the label of the publishers and on the front is an engraved artist’s plaque. Interestingly, the framing also bears its original card swing tag (unfortunately, the original price has been removed).
