Namji Ritual Doll from West Africa (Cameroon)

These dolls were used for ritual purposes as a protective fetish figure with beads and magical additions, as a fertility figure for young women. Given to encourage fertility, young girls would play with them or strap them to their backs, whilst mirroring their mothers and helping them with their responsibilities. They were also kept by women trying to fall pregnant and in the hope it would allow easy childbirth.
